Interview with Derrick of SG Food on Foot
What should your visitors be expecting while researching your blog?
Derrick: Visitors will be able to find food reviews of eateries and restaurants near the vicinity of the MRT stations. They also can find the information on how to travel to the food establishments using the public transportation.
What is your definition of an ideal/perfect meal?
Derrick: An ideal/perfect meal will consider of taste, ambience, service and cost.
Food from which Asian country do you like the most?
Derrick: For me the food in Singapore is the best. Singapore is a multi-cultural melting pot that encompasses cuisines from different races.
What advice would you give to other bloggers who just started their own food blog?
Derrick: Blog for passion and not for commercial reason looking for monetary returns.
What do you wish to see more or less of the food blogging community?
Derrick: While food blogging involves taking beautiful pictures of the food. I have seen increasing people going to the extreme of the taking a good shot when the restaurant is busy or there are other customers around.

I felt that this is very disruptive to the restaurant’s operations and in a way or another disrespectful to both the restaurant and customers dining in.

Editor Review of SG Food on Foot

SG Food on Foot blog is a foodie blog designed and written by Derrick Tan with a bit different idea and concept.

This site is among the popular ones in Singapore with overall 40,000 visits a month, mainly from Singapore. The unique idea brought Derrick lots of exposure and popularity among Singapore food lovers. Since there are thousands of places to eat in Singapore, one could spend several months exploring and finding out new places to eat, so Derrick gives insights and exact directions to reach fine eating places around public transport stations where people can enjoy delicious meals.

Sections on the blog are divided into lines of stations. So when you travel on MRT stations, you’d know where to look for. You can check out “CC Line”, “DT Line”, “EW Line” , “NE Line” , “NS Line” , “Restaurants” sections, and “Index”, where all posts go without separation.

Visual Appeal – 82%

When you come to SG Food on Foot, a nice header image awaits you with the latest post published beneath the menu. Like on every food blog, images are the essential part of the business which Derrick took seriously, and his every post is decorated with beautiful and vivid images. Bright, with sharp focus, images bring fine experience to the observer.

This site runs on a Blogger platform with standard theme features, which is less eye appealing, and don’t have technical possibilities as advanced content management system, such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal. So, nothing fancy on SGFoodonFoot.com. A sidebar to the right, with several banners, navigational sequences, and popular posts.

Originality – 86%

After looking at and reviewing many food and travel blogs, one must have something truly unique to say “Wow, this is something different.”

And this blog’s idea is really different. How to reach the specific place via MRT or bus stations is not covered by many other blogs. Here you will find many good restaurants around the many stations in Singapore, which is really diverse compare to other food blogs we’ve encountered before.

Practical Tips – 85%

SG Food on Foot gives you useful info on restaurants and food places on Singapore, so you’ll always find some useful info no matter where you are in Singapore. With detail explanations, this is a big time helpful and practical info. Specific oriented, and well explained, it will guide you to the food spots near stations, so you’ll be experienced and like local, knowing the best places near specific station. Handy and good to have at your disposal.

Web Usability – 79%

All of the Derrick’s articles are well designed and decorated with images, with white background and standard black fonts. Readability is good. On the other hand, the site is not mobile friendly and responsive, so if you visit this site on mobile device, experience would be a little less comfortable. We would recommend changing to WordPress with a premium theme, which would improve reader’s experience and overall usability of the site.

SG Food on Foot is a good blog, well written and maintained. Lovely image and unique and creative idea for the blog topic really differentiate this site from others. With some changes and improvements on technical base, it would reach even higher level of success.
